Onion Sprouting Seeds

Onion has been cultivated since antiquity. Ancient Egypt was famed for the mildness of its onions. High in vitamins B1, B2 and C, Onion sprouts taste like fresh onion and are generally blended with clover or alfalfa to make them more mild. Onion sprouts are 20% protein and good sources of vitamins A, C and D.

Onion Sprouting Seeds for Commercial Growers

Onion is a specialty crop with an unusually loyal customer. The sprouts come up as fine, dark green spears with a real onion flavor, concentrated enough that a chef uses them as a seasoning rather than a filler. Nobody buys a clamshell of onion sprouts by accident, which is exactly what makes them profitable: the people who want them will pay for them and will not substitute.

Understand going in that this is a patience crop. Onion is slower than nearly everything else we sell, and that slowness is the reason there is not much competition on the shelf.

Growing notes

Onion seed germinates slowly and unevenly compared to a brassica, and it stays in the building long enough that sanitation and airflow discipline matter more than usual. Penn State Extension groups onion with the crops in the general 7 to 21 day window for tray production, and in practice onion sits at the long end of that range. Plan the space, and do not try to rush it with heat; warm and slow is how you lose a crop.

  • Fresh seed, tested by lot. Onion seed loses viability faster than most species in this catalog, so age is not a detail here, it is the whole ballgame.
  • Untreated and grown for food use.
  • Germination figure and lot identity with every order, which matters more on a slow crop than on a fast one, because you cannot afford to discover a weak lot on day twelve.

Food safety and documentation

A longer crop cycle means more days of exposure, so your controls have to hold for longer. FDA’s sprout requirements are in 21 CFR part 112, Subpart M, covering seed treatment, agricultural water, environmental monitoring and spent sprout irrigation water sampling. Every lot we sell passes ISS food safety screening, with documentation available on request.

Where it fits

Onion is a chef and specialty retail item, not a volume driver. Price it accordingly. If you are building a specialty line to sell alongside it, garlic chives and cilantro are the natural companions, and the wash system handles the fine debris load these crops produce.
