Pea Sprouting Seeds

SunGarden Seed offers Green Peas, Yellow Peas, and Speckled Peas. One of the first food crops ever to be cultivated, “Garden Peas” probably originated in the Mediterranean region and Western Asia. High in fiber, protein and carbohydrates, iron, potassium, vitamin A, thiamine and riboflavin, peas provide excellent nutrition at a very low cost. They can be grown in dark or light. When grown completely in the dark, the sprouts have the look and taste of thin yellow asparagus.

Peas can be lightly sprouted and eaten raw. They are a great protein-rich addition to Crispy Mixes or Crunchy Mixes. They can also be grown longer and the pea tendrils harvested to sell as microgreens.

Pea Sprouting Seeds for Commercial Growers

Pea is the crop that turned microgreens into a real business for a lot of growers. Pea shoots have a sweet, unmistakably fresh flavor, they yield heavily by weight, and chefs buy them all year. If you are choosing one tray crop to build volume on, this is usually it.

The same seed also grows as a conventional sprout, which gives you two products and two price points from one purchase. Few seeds in this catalog are that flexible.

Growing notes

Pea is a large seed with a high seeding rate, and that is the number growers most often get wrong. Utah State University Extension puts pea microgreens at roughly 150 grams per 1020 tray with a six hour presoak, about three days covered, and eight to ten days to harvest. That is five times the seed weight of a brassica tray, and it is why pea economics live or die on seed cost per tray rather than seed cost per pound.

  • Whole, unsplit seed, screened hard. Splits are the main enemy in pea production: they rot, they sour a tray, and they pull your stand density down.
  • High vigor lots. Pea has to push through its own seeding mass, so weak seed shows up as a thin, patchy tray rather than a slow one.
  • Untreated and grown for food use.
  • Germination figure and lot number with every order.

Food safety and documentation

Pea shoots and pea sprouts are eaten raw, which puts the seed at the center of the plan. FDA’s sprout requirements are in 21 CFR part 112, Subpart M, covering seed treatment, agricultural water, environmental monitoring and spent sprout irrigation water sampling. Every lot we offer passes ISS food safety screening first, and documentation is available for your records.

Scaling it

Pea is heavy and wet at harvest, so dewatering is the bottleneck most growers hit first. Our cyclone centrifuge system and wash system are what make a high-volume pea line survivable on normal labor.
