Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds

This legume originated in Central Asia and the Mid East, with its name derived from the Arabic word for “best fodder.” The sprouts are the second most popular sprout (after bean sprouts) in North America. They have a sweeter, fresher taste when yellow, but market acceptance often demands alfalfa sprouts to be greened.

Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds for Commercial Growers

Alfalfa is the sprout that built this category. It is still the highest-volume sprout in most of the country, still the one the clamshell shelf is organized around, and still the crop that separates growers who understand seed from growers who buy on price. We have been supplying it since 1982, and the reason customers stay is boring and important: consistency from lot to lot.

Grown right, alfalfa gives you a fast turn, a high yield per pound of seed, and a mild flavor that works in a sandwich, a salad mix, or a blend. Grown from the wrong seed, it gives you uneven germination, a short shelf life, and a phone call from your buyer.

Why seed quality shows up so fast

Alfalfa seed is small and it is grown as a forage crop for most of the world, which means most of what exists was never intended to be eaten as a sprout. Our alfalfa is selected for sprouting, cleaned to remove weed seed and inert material, and tested lot by lot for germination and vigor. Vigor is the part a germination percentage will not tell you: two lots can both test at 95 percent and behave completely differently in a rotating drum.

  • Tight, uniform seed size. Uniform seed hydrates at the same rate, which is what even germination actually depends on.
  • Cleaned to sprouting standard. Weed seed and chaff are yield loss and a quality complaint waiting to happen.
  • Lot number and germination figure on request, every time.
  • Available in sizes from small trial quantities up to pallet volume.

Food safety is a seed decision first

Alfalfa sprouts are eaten raw, so the seed is where your food safety plan either holds or does not. FDA’s requirements for sprout operations are in 21 CFR part 112, Subpart M, which covers seed treatment, agricultural water, environmental monitoring and the sampling of spent sprout irrigation water. Every lot we offer goes through ISS food safety screening before it is sold, and lot documentation is available for your records and your audits. We also sell the equipment that makes the rest of that plan practical, and we talk growers through it daily.

Equipment and blends

For growers running alfalfa at volume, the wash system and cyclone centrifuge system are the two pieces that change your labor math most. If you want to move beyond straight alfalfa, our broccoli and clover blend is the usual next step, and it sells at a better margin.
