Barley Sprouting Seeds

One of the earliest cultivated cereals, barley is grown throughout the world. It is used commercially by breweries, pet stores, in agriculture and can be juiced for a nutritious drink. It is often sold to restaurants where it is added to fruit and vegetable drinks.

Barley Sprouting Seeds for Commercial Growers

Barley is a two-market seed, and growers who only think of it one way tend to leave money on the table. Sprouted short, it is a sweet, chewy grain sprout for breads and cereals. Grown on a little longer in a tray, it becomes barley grass, which is the form most juice bars and powder producers are buying.

That flexibility is the reason to stock it. The same sack serves a bakery customer who wants a three-day grain sprout and a juicing customer who wants green blades, and the crop is forgiving enough that neither one is a difficult run.

Growing notes

Barley is a cereal grain, so it soaks and sprouts fast and it wants drainage. The most common mistake is soaking it like a bean: a long soak on a cereal grain gets you sour seed and a sticky mass instead of clean sprouts. Penn State Extension puts cereal grains including barley inside the general 7 to 21 day window for microgreen and grass production, with the exact timing depending on how long you want the blade.

  • Cleaned, food-grade, untreated. Most barley in commerce is feed or malting stock. Ours is handled for food use and sprouting from the start.
  • Hulless where the crop calls for it. If your application needs the hull off, tell us what you are making and we will point you at the right lot.
  • Germination tested by lot, with the number available on request.

Lot documentation and food safety

Grain sprouts intended to be eaten raw fall under the same logic as every other sprout, and FDA’s framework is in 21 CFR part 112, Subpart M. Seed is the control point. Every lot goes through ISS food safety screening before we offer it, and documentation is available when a buyer or an inspector asks.

Handling it at volume

Grain sprouts are heavy and wet, which is a materials handling problem before it is anything else. Our wash system and cyclone centrifuge system are built for exactly that load.
