Fresh, Healthy Living in 2020 with Sprouts and Microgreens in Your Diet

Fresh, Healthy Living in 2020 with Sprouts and Microgreens in Your Diet By: Alicia Rennoll Sprouts and microgreens will be a major health trend in 2020, owing in no small part to their many health benefits and the ease with which they can be grown. In the first-ever scientific analysis of nutrient levels in edible microgreens, the American Chemical Society found that microgreens are more nutritious than their mature counterparts. It is just one of many studies proving that raw, healthy microgreens and sprouts have an important role to play in boosting our health and wellbeing. Why Go Microgreen? Researchers found that the seedlings of spinach, red cabbage, and other vegetables, when allowed to grow to within one to three inches in height and harvested within four days of germination, had a host of important nutrients. Compared to mature greens, microgreens have higher concentrations of important vitamins and carotenoids, which are essential for long-term health. If you wish to live a long happy life, try to consume a wide array of microgreens, as there

Sprouts Unlimited Voluntary Market Withdrawal of Clover Sprouts

January 2, 2020 Confirming our commitment to food safety, we would like to make the public aware of a voluntary recall of clover sprouts. Sprouts Unlimited of Marion, IA, has issued a voluntary recall of clover sprouts from the market.  The sprouts were grown using our seed lot SCL2-9AX.  Samples have been taken of the sprouts in question as well as the seed used. At this time there has been no confirmation that the seed lot or the sprouts were contaminated with E. coli or any other pathogenic bacteria. Although this lot was not purified using our new state-of-the-art technology, we are confident that our documented, best-in-class food safety processes safeguarded the integrity of this product.  We are awaiting further tests to determine if a withdrawal of the clover seed from the market is necessary.  In the meantime and out of an abundance of caution we recommend customers discontinue using SCL2-9AX.  We are shipping our customers replacement seed while we await test results.  If the seed is confirmed to contain pathogens we

Erucin

Erucin, a new promising cancer chemopreventive agent from rocket salads, shows anti-proliferative activity on human lung carcinoma A549 cells. FoodChem Toxicol. 2009 Jul;47(7):1430-6.Epub 2009 Mar 27. Melchini A, Costa C, Traka M, Miceli N, Mithen R, De Pasquale R, Trovato A. Dip.Farmaco-Biologico,Facoltà di Farmacia, Università di Messina, VillaggioAnnunziata, 98168 Messina,Italy. Erucin (ER) is a dietaryisothiocyanate present in cruciferous vegetables, such as rocket salads (Erucasativa Mill.,Diplotaxis sp.), that has been recently considered a promising cancer chemopreventivephytochemical. Biological activity of ER was investigated on human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells, analyzing its effects on molecular pathways involved in apoptosis and cell cycle arrest, such as PARP-1 cleavage, p53 and p21 protein expression. Our results show that ER affects the A549 cell proliferation, enhancing significantly p53 and p21 protein expression in a dose-dependent manner (p<0.001). PARP-1 cleavage occurs only after exposure to high concentrations of ER (50 microM), in accordance to previous studies showing similar bioactivity of other isothiocyanates (ITCs). Our study reports for the first time that the induction of p53, p21 and PARP-1
